What to bring
Items
like a small first aid kit (with basic treatment for reef cuts, antibiotics,
antiseptic cream, tweezers etc), sunblock, lip balm, tampons, insect repellent
and contact lens solution are a good idea, as these things are not always
available or can be expensive. Snorkelling gear is definitely worth bringing -
with Tonga having some of the world’s best underwater visibility and fabulous
coral reefs.
You won’t
find any spare surfing gear in Tonga, so bring all the surf stuff you might
need. Extra wax, leashes, fins, etc.
Bring booties to protect yourself from the reef cuts, even if most people surf
without them. Indeed, the take off zone is usually deep enough and the reef
flat and dead.
A wetsuit
or a shorty is not necessary in the water, but can be of comfort on long boat
rides. A rash guard or long sleeved T-shirt is highly recommended for sun
protection. Bring along plenty of solar cream with high SPF, this is highlly
recommended.
As a final note -
We frequent some of the outer island villages to rest and explore after
activities. These villages have public schools that have a hard time getting
funds and materials for the children. If you have the extra space, consider
bringing some paper, notebooks, pencils, etc. that can be donated to the
schools on our visit. The teachers and children will greatly appreciate it and
it will help to leave a favorable impression of traveling surfers in Vava'u.
