Surfing in Vava'u can be one of the most memorable surfing adventures you may ever have. With that said, the surf in Vava'u can be fickle. The conditions can be challenging to obtain, especially during the winter months when stiff trades blow from the Southeast. It is my opinion that the chances of getting good surf is better during the Tongan summer. The winds drop off for weeks at a time making the eastern reef more accessible.
Now don't get me wrong, when Vava'u is on, the waves are as good as anywhere in the world as the picture above shows. The likely hood of seeing anyone else surfing is very unlikely and you will get all the waves you want.
So, If you are interested in a holiday which could include some awesome surfing mixed with diving, fishing and other south pacific adventures drop us a line.
Vava’u is made up of a group of over
50 islands and offers uncrowded surfing in beautiful tropical settings. Surfing is
still an adventure here and the best thing is that it’s more than likely it’ll
just be you and your guide on the waves.
There are two separate
seasons of surfing here in Vava’u – winter (June-Sept) with south east trades
bringing swell from the southern ocean swells and summer (Dec-March) with light
winds and northerly swells from Hawaii.
The Water and Below:
The water is always warm
here between 22-28º C so while you may not need a wetsuit for the water there
is sometimes a wind chill factor during the winter season so a spring or tube
suit could be a good idea. As all breaks are on coral reefs – booties are a good idea, possibly
even a surf helmet if the thought of shallow reef breaks cause you some
concern. Betadine or some similar antiseptic cream is a good idea for any
little feet nicks etc you get on the reef to stop infection.
